Why U2’s 2002 Super Bowl Halftime Show Still Matters

The last time U2 performed at an NFL halftime show was Super Bowl XXXVI on February 3, 2002, just months after the September 11 attacks. Performing Beautiful Day, MLK and Where the Streets Have No Name, the band delivered a moving tribute as the names of the victims appeared on a giant screen.

Bono famously revealed an American flag inside his jacket, creating one of the most memorable images of the evening. Interestingly, that performance also happened during a Rams game, when the then-St. Louis Rams faced the New England Patriots. Now, 24 years later, U2 are returning to the NFL stage during another Rams matchup.

U2’s 50th Anniversary: What Can Fans Expect?

Formed in Dublin in 1976, U2 have spent five decades creating some of rock music’s most recognisable songs, including With or Without You, One and Beautiful Day. Their Thanksgiving Eve appearance will celebrate that remarkable milestone in front of a global audience.

The performance also comes shortly after the scheduled November 13 release of Carnaval De Luz, the band’s first studio album of new material in nine years. Could the halftime set bring together classic hits and new songs? Fans will have to see, as U2 have yet to reveal the setlist or the identities of their special guests.

Why Packers vs Rams Is a Historic Thanksgiving Eve Game

For the first time, the NFL will introduce a Thanksgiving Eve game, extending its traditional holiday football schedule to Wednesday night. The Green Bay Packers will travel to Los Angeles to face the Rams at SoFi Stadium, bringing together two well-known NFL teams for a nationally significant matchup.

The addition of U2 makes the occasion even more special. Following Beyoncé’s 2024 Christmas Day halftime show and Snoop Dogg’s 2025 holiday performance, Netflix is continuing to bring major musical acts into its NFL broadcasts. This time, fans will experience both a primetime football game and a milestone rock performance.
