The Copa del Rey 2026/27 brings clubs from across Spanish football together in one of the country’s most historic knockout competitions.The Copa del Rey schedule begins with the preliminary round in late September before progressing through the national stages and ultimately reaching the final in Seville on 24 April 2027.

Unlike a league campaign, the competition gives lower-division sides the opportunity to face some of Spain’s biggest clubs in direct knockout football. That structure has long made the Copa one of the more unpredictable parts of the Spanish season.

Real Sociedad Defend Their Crown as Spain’s Biggest Clubs Enter the Race

Real Sociedad begin the 2026/27 edition as defending champions after defeating Atlético Madrid on penalties in the 2026 final. The match finished 2–2 after extra time before the Basque side prevailed in the shootout, bringing the trophy back to San Sebastián.

The new campaign starts from a very different point, with regional clubs entering first before progressively larger sides join as the tournament develops. As the competition moves deeper into the national rounds, attention will increasingly turn toward leading LaLiga clubs including Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Athletic Club and Real Sociedad.

The four teams participating in the 2027 Spanish Super Cup: Barcelona, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and Atlético Madrid – are also expected to enter the Copa at a later stage under the competition structure used for Super Cup participants. With Barcelona and Real Madrid both in the tournament, another El Clásico also remains possible if the draw brings them together later in the competition.
